Correctional Facilities

Get Your Facility Project Started in 4 Steps
Tuesday, April 27, 2010

Too often correctional facility projects begin at a detailed level or use a micro level of analysis . Plans are made. Construction crews begin their work, and a mass of problems arise. Gaps are seen. Errors were made. These problems aren't easily remedied and major amounts of time and money are wasted. It all rests on the shoulders of the planning team and their planning process.

The solution:  macro analysis. Macro analysis is a method that your team uses to analyze the major concepts; it avoids drilling down into the micro level of detail. By using this method, problems become evident from the beginning and can be alleviated. In the end, you avoid spending unnecessary funds and time.

Here’s how to perform macro analysis:

1. Set your overall mission, goals, or objectives with your team.

2.  Create a set of criteria, key concepts, the model must have. Key concepts may include:

  • It reduces staff and costs
  • It has repeatability
  • Geographic location criteria
  • Expansion criteria
  • Site geometry criteria
  • Criteria for the facility's physical environment

3. Create an evaluation criteria.

This criteria specifies the requirements or philosophies of the facility. Remember to work from the top down when defining details. The three main areas of focus include:

  • Organizational requirements
  • Operational requirements
  • Functional requirements

4. Create several different models and evaluate against the criteria and requirements.

By using macro analysis, you can see that it may take intense focus for a short period of time. However, it keeps details on a manageable level and allows you to create several models to select from. From there, your team can decide whether to move forward or not.
